Head Gasket Needed - what would you do??
I am into my 2001 Disco II SE7 for about $5000.
It has 150,000 miles on it.
I have new shocks, springs, brakes, thermostat, rear hub, an several cosmetic improvements.
Getting the 3 Amigos too.
Overall Disco holds road well, shifts well, and looks great too.
I checked the coolant and see that its empty, blowing white smoke from exhaust, bad smell, etc...I need a new Head Gasket.
I was quoted $1600 for gasket, bolts, wires, plugs, oil, coolant - seem fair.
He is going to send the block out to machine shop prior to completing the job.
would you guys put this much $$ into an engine with 150,000 miles. Do you think it's worth it? i appreciate your feedback. thanks!

He's going to send the block out to a machine shop ? Maybe he's going to send the heads to a machine shop, that would sound reasonable. If that is the case, that's not a bad deal. You could do it yourself and save $1,000, if you have time and a place to do it. Otherwise, get it done and you'll be good for another 150K miles.
You are burried in the truck, can't sell it that way unless you sell it for $3000 or less. I would get the head gaskets replaced and drive it for the next 5 plus years to get your monies worth out of it.
How mechanical are you, have you thought about doing the head gaskets yourself?

Fair price for what is being done. You can do it yourself if you have the resources and time. I would do it myself, but the price is right.
As Mike said, you won't sell it for much if it is broke. Fix it and keep it up. You will have a great truck for years to come. I have spent about $1K over 4 years on a very neglected truck. If the motor blew tomorrow, I would just put another in.
