Default Help! Need advice. Looking to get an 04.

Hi all.

New to this forum. Wanted to see if i could get some friendly advice in purchasing an 04 Discovery II. I am looking for a very capable off road vehicle with nice styling. I have always been a fan of the disco's. I have two friends who love theirs. I have heard that they can be a little temperamental from time to time. It doesn't really deter me because I have always wrenched on things. Do all my own usual maintenance on my vehicles, plugs, breaks, rotors etc.

Lets get down to the brass tacks. I'm going to be scouring Craigslist and auto trader for a deal...what are some things to look for. I know about the head liner issue but that's minor. What do you recommend i look for. How can i tell if it needs some pricey repairs. Front and rear diff going out? Head gasket replacement? If it does have an issue i want to be able to detect it so i can work it into the deal...e.g. Its going to need the engine rebuilt...so knock off 3000 off the price kind thing. Or maybe I just walk away from it.

Any advice you have would be great. Thanks.

see https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...scovery-21328/

plan on a pre-purchase inspection by your mechanic. Get an exhaust gas in coolant chemical test done, plus mechanic gauge test of oil pump as part of that.

After the list and a couple of test drives, then take it to a good Rover mechanic and pay to have a pre-purchase inspection done by someone who know Disco's well, it will save you a fortune in problems latter.

Curious, what year Disco are you looking for, ever had a 4wheeler before and what will you be using it for. This cam make a difference on what you buy.

Thanks Mike for the advice. I am looking at the 03-04 model. I have not had a 4x4 before. I have rented them and taken them off road but never my own. I plan to use it for camping trips/ off road fun. Minor around town driving. My wife will probably use it to commute to the metro 4 miles away. I also just want a capable machine that i can use to get to anywhere or out of anywhere. Zombe apocalypse? Just kidding...or am I.

The zombies slip on the oil sheen left by the Rover, easier to out-distance them....
