HIGH MILEAGE with NO MAJOR PROBLEMS
#11
I have a high mileage Disco (209kmi) and since the rebuild 4 1/2 years ago, I've only replace a PS & water pump. It doesn't leak or squeak. All I do is change the oil and grease it. I attribute my success to the help and info on this forum and not letting anyone touch it.... except for the dealer who ran diagnostics on my ABS module and immobilizer. And now I'm sure that I've just jinxed myself and tomorrow every warning light will be on.

Both my Discovery's will hit 200k this year, I have had to do head gaskets on both of them 1 time. I dont consider head gaskets a major deal, not with these engines. No problems with the motors transmissions, or anything else. I keep the fluids changed, I use high quality fluids. I have broken a steering rod while off road. Both trucks are daily drivers. when I did the heads I completely resealed the motors and got new plugs, wires, thermostat, coil packs for d2, water pumps. those items had not failed, but I replaced them anyway. I had those items off the motor so I saw no reason not to replace them.

is it common practice for a company to turn down a vehicle? is it a black and white issue, like they have a book that says "go/no go"?

My '99 is approaching 124k. The previous service records indicate a head gasket and machine job from Great Basin Rover. Sadly, they didn't troubleshoot the issue and just fixed the head gasket.
I noticed the temp guage creeping above half at Mcdonalds, instantly parked it and bought an ultraguage. Running hot. Diagnosed as a plugged T-stat, replaced with the 180 TD5 and I'm doing great. It's been the most reliable $5k car I've bought (knock on wood).
The two biggest issues are easy to fix when you purchase: TD5 Tstat (with OBDII guage to read the actual temps) will keep you from Head Gasket issues (especially if you have upgraded to the "new" style).
Next is the serviceable drive-shaft which will prevent catastrophic tranny failure.
Then it is just routine maintenance and praying that your block won't slip a liner.

I'm around 170k with no major problems. Besides regular oil changes:
- I've replaced the waterpump and front seal
- the intake gasket
- an alternator
- the front driveshaft
However, I've got MAJOR rust issues and I've just started using anti-freeze this winter. At this point, the rust is going to do in the vehicle.

2001 D2 with 167,602 miles. The compressor for the SLS failed two days after we drove it off the lot. The dealer replaced it. Other than that and the obligatory head gasket job I haven't had any expensive issues. I have done a lot of preemptive work on it (front drive shaft, crank sensor, t-stat, etc. Of course, I've done all the usual high mileage vehicle stuff like brakes, water pump and u joints, and I did recently do the coil spring conversation. It's been maintenance intensive for sure, but it has never stranded me...unlike my wretched (newer and lower mileage) Chevy Silverado.

Auto forums are, understandably, full of posts about problems. I get that. But it would be great to hear from folks with high mileage Discos (guess that would be most) who have had no major problems. AND what they attribute their success to, be it a service schedule, anticipatory maintenance/replacement, a particular product etc.
