Default Homemade Fan Clutch Tool

Here’s what I did instead of buying a fan clutch tool.

I had a piece of 1” steel bar stock from Lowe’s lying around. I drilled a 3/8” hole near one end.

I slip the hole over the head of one of the pulley bolts at about the 7 o’clock position as viewed facing the engine from the front, as pictured. (I removed the fan to make it easier to make the photos.).

I “lean” the tool toward the right against the water pump hub to provide clockwise resistance to the wrench turning counterclockwise.

Inexpensive. Easy. Works great. I hope this helps someone.

I don't recall where I bought the wrench. It was a few years ago. I didn't have a Crescent wrench that would fit.

BTW, that's not rust. It's patina.

Do this a lot, being a mechanic for the last 45 years. Cracks me up when another mechanic, after witnessing me make a specialty tool, says..."you know, Snap On makes a tool for that?" I'm like..."you do know that l just made this for one tenth of the cost and it's in my hand right now?"

Wow! I'll take that as a pat on the back from The Deputy!

But, I'll bet the tools you fabricate are way more cool than this one!

Nice. Simple and effective solutions are the best solutions. Thankfully mine has never been tighter than a good hammer blow on the fan wrench, but this is a great solution
