How to clean a used oil cooler from inside?

I am going to install an engine oil cooler to my 04 D2. I wonder what are the best fluids/solvents to clean it thoroughly and get the old residues out.

Most auto parts stores will sell an aerosol can designed exactly for this. It is used commonly to backflush transmission coolers when replacing transmissions.
