When I first got my D2, I bought it with the seal around the timing cover blown and it was sucking in the coolant. I would be prepared to do that in the future due to a poor design of the coolant gallows around the timing cover and when you're at it, change the timing chain. I will be moving the coil packs with the relocation kit Extinct offers and replacing all leads, plugs, and injectors. I would suggest doing that to yours and with moving the coil packs, makes future maintenance easier. I have also changed all the coolant hoses and coolant, I would highly suggest doing that to yours. With the block being aluminum, overheating causes huge problems even if it is for a short period.

I would also highly suggest the Ultraguage to read engine temp due to the OEM gauge being junk.

Other than regular maintenance, Just enjoy it.

quality of timing chains and gears is generally not great. Especially the gears. I again would not just go replacing known good parts (assuming its good) jsut to put a "new" part in. Unless it's a flowkooler pump and a fresh nissens radiator.

Agreed. I have had to change that seal twice since purchasing mine with 130,000km on it (currently has 202,000km). All I meant was changing the chain and gears at the same time due to having them exposed when putting the new seal on(if he has to change the seal).

I have had dozens of D2's with many more miles than yours, my personal fleet was 267k (rip - gone in traffic accident), 237k, and 218k; all 1999-2000. #1 rule is do not overheat. Accurate temperature gauge, inline thermostat, and running without tightening the pressure cap are my biggest secrets to that. Next would be PCV mod, 15w40 motor oil and frequent oil changes. If it is not ticking currently I would not pre-emptively change HG or worry about slipped liner. Have personally experience one not caused by overheating but that predominantly happens only on the later blocks. Suggest you read this as well: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...97/#post875543

Those are good. Love the PCV mod and semi-loose pressure cap trick.

If... if you are going to change head gaskets one day after a failure, go with the metal head gaskets. You'll thank me later. Also, when the motor is cold and not running, you can remove a spark plug and snake in there with a mini camera which can tell you if you already have metal head gaskets from a prior owner. The cameras cost about $15 on Amazon and eBay and connect to your smartphone.

I'm on 203,000 miles.
