The PO just got told by a dealer that it needed a new engine for $10k!

I've heard of people walking away from houses but not Rovers, but it does make sense if you've ever been told that before, whether right or not.

The previous owner told me that one day she stopped at the light and then started driving and the car wouldn't go more than 40 mph. So she parked it and got a different car. I guess she got tired of paying to fix it. And then she moved to a different city. I think someone was supposed to get the car but never did. And she forgot about it.

Bernice is a dirty girl

She's been abandoned for over a year. Predictably I couldn't start her. I've replaced the battery so far and my next step is to replace the fluids. This is my first LR but I'm looking forward to tinkering with her. I have a very limited experience working on cars so I'll be scouring this forum a good deal and any advice is much appreciated.
Buy, beg or borrow a code reader first before you invest too much dosh in repairs. If you can 'extract' codes it will direct you onto any major problems.

PS: BTW, I like 'dirty girls'

Good that you got the backstory.

Sounds like limp mode. Could be as simple as a dead battery.

Get the codes read as advised and good luck, she'll clean up if you treat her right!

Dumping a car over a bad / loose battery terminal would be pretty classic. But, definitely sounds like limp mode.
