I doubt that low voltage would affect the key working.
Have your charging system checked, could be a bad battery or a alternator going south.
And to help with the OCD with the key.
Pop the fob off of the key, turn the key over and then replace the fob, so now you will be using the other side of the key.
The bottons will still be facing out but the less used side will be used...confused yet?

No I'm not confused. I'm going to use the spare for a while, it's hardly ever been used.

I learned in the air force a hundred different ways to say operator error. We weren't allowed to just put operator error in aircraft log books because it might hurt the pilot's delicate ego so we found ways around it. I blame everything on operator error. Your car could have blown up and it still would have been operator error.

i was never military, but like you i love to blame peoples issues on OP ERROR. its terrific to see as they get all worked up over it.

Hmnn, going through the whole taking the center console out thing last night to get at the transfer case I noticed that I could'nt get my key out either, but thats because I had the tranny lever in any position other than park. However, once I did get the key stuck in my 99 disco 2 model. Turns out, that my steering wheel lock was engaged from turning it to far to the left or right after shutting the vehicle off. This made it impossible for me to get the key out, let alone move the key to start it. I yanked on the steering wheel all the way in one direction to take pressure off the steering assembly and low and behold it worked. Thank God! Might not be your problem, but worth a try next time this may happen to you. Hope everything has been working smoothly for ya.
