Knocking.... Power Steering Pump?
I recently heard a knocking sound coming from the engine of my '04 Disco. I searched the forum database and didn't really find any similar cases. Here are some things I noticed.
- Sound is not as metallic sounding as lifters
- Sound seems to be coming from top to mid driver side engine
- Power steering fluid bubbles back into reservoir when you turn the wheel
- When steering is under load sound is quieter sometimes eliminated
- Knocking increases in both speed and sound with rpm's of the engine
- Steering Fluid isn't burnt but when I checked it was at the Min. line
- New oil & filter as of today 10W/40
- approx. 88,000 miles on the truck
Has anyone had similar problems or know what this may be? Is this the pump? Bad hose? Need a bleeding? I'm not sure. Thanks Everyone!

First remove your serp belt, start the engine and see if the noise is still there.
Only run the engine for a few min without the belt on.
If the noise is gone then turn the engine back off and spin every pulley by hand, any noise?
Report back what you find.

It is confirmed. The Power Steering Pump is shot. Has anyone replaced this that may have some tips?
Specialty Tools?
Anything that should be removed for the change?
Anything that you recommend not removing?
Any other easy fixes/repairs I might think about while I'm in there?
Does anyone have any good "how to" links

Many of us have changed the pump. No tips, it's easy, follow the Rave CD. The clutch fan nut is 36mm.
Here are a couple cheap 36mm wrenches:

Large open end adjustable or non-adjustable wrench to fit the pulley remover tool
Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
3/8-inch drive ratchet
3/8-inch drive short extension
Set of line wrenches
Important: let the engine cool off completely.

Forget the power steering pulley remover tool. The pulley on these engines are bolted to the flange at the end of the shaft. They aren't press fit like a lot of other vehicles
