Default Lifter reconditioning questions

Are the lifters in the video below somewhat similar to the D2’s?

Is it a good idea to do this when the lower intake is off?

Why does it seem like you’ll never hear more than one lifter ticking if they stick?

Is the liquimoly lifter treatment basically just high quality snake oil?

Do you have a lifter problem, or suspect you have a lifter problem? Many years ago the conventional wisdom for a sticky lifter was to run a quart of transmission oil in with your engine oil for a while. Transmission oil is high in detergents, often times it would break up deposits and cure the problem. I did this recently to a truck someone gave me, I added the transmission oil, ran it for 200 miles, then changed the oil and put in straight motor oil. I don't know why but the truck idled very poorly when I got it, and I knew that the guy who gave it to me didn't change his oil much, and he used cheap oil and filters. The idle didn't change much if at all while running the transmission oil, but after I changed the oil it started improving and soon after the idle was much improved. I've heard that running transmission oil can cause problems, if a bunch of deposits break free they can plug galleys filters, screens etc., I don't know of a case of that actually happening though.

D2 lifters look almost identical like in that video. When you have the lower intake off you can take the chance to clean them. Carbon deposits can make them sticky and you don't get them cleaned by adding stuff to the engine oil. The only real way is to take them apart, drain them completely and clean the parts.

@neuropathy I do not know if the Liquidmoly is snake oil or not but mine quieted down after a few 100 miles when I used it, the 1st time so I just drop a can in every oil change.

If you decide to service the hydraulic valve lifters, do them one at a time, or at least keep track of the bores from which they came and put them each back where they were.
