Maybe once you've done the above suggestions your buddy would let you swap cars with him for a week? That also might uncover anything else that neither one of you knew about - remember he may just be thinking - hey, no family here and my buddy's family could really benefit from my car, and I've driven this car 148K miles and I'm tired of it so time for something new
