On the level or on hills?

Some clunking is normal, especially on hills.

I find that if I follow a strict procedure when parking and starting it doesn't happen.

The procedure being park the car... engage E brake... shift to P.

When starting up, start engine, shift to D, release E brake.

Just a quick update
The noise was due to a failing u joint in front prop
Could have been real ugly since I kind of ignored the noise for a while
Anyhow I rebuild the front shaft with 3 new u joint and also had purchased a new ball bearing but when I realized that I don't have the advocate tools to remove the old one I decided to keep the old one and get my $50 back
For the u joints I paid $30 each and did it myself
Sure beats paying $500+ for a new shaft
Keep on roving

I think all D2's and LR 4x4's clunk after they are a few years old, it's what they do, whether the drive shafts are new or old. Changing from Drive to Reverse in auto there is a clunk in the transmission. All that is happening in most cases is the backlash in the various transmission gears and differentials etc is being taken up. One has to bear in mind these are pretty agricultural engineering to maintain robustness and cost. Obviously the driveshafts need to be kept in good order but there is little else one can do about the general wear on bearings and gears unless you tear it all down and replace everything at huge cost. In most cases the D2 is 10+ years old and also upwards of 100K miles which will inevitably take it's toll. New 4x4's sound good and are very tight and less clunky but it doesn't last that long. Another factor is how well they were maintained and used before the current owner acquired the truck. Many are just driven hard and basic servicing (oil and filter changes) by the previous owners and more used as an everyday car chasing around everywhere with little knowledge or regard for the changes in noises or habits.
