Default Lug Nut Issue

Hi all,

Rotated my tires and noticed that I accidentally used the nuts from the spare carrier on the wheels. I know they are different sizes and I should have known better.

I haven't removed them yet, but is this a sure fire way to strip the threads? Everything I have read says yes, but checking once again to see if anyone has had this issue.

Thanks!

The threads are the same size -- it's the thread depth that's different. The studs on the spare mount are longer than the wheel studs, so the nuts for the spare are bored and threaded all the way through. The wheel lugs are a blind hole. So using the spare lugs on the wheels is not a problem.
If you try to use the wheel lugs on the spare, they will bottom out and not hold the wheel tight.

Interesting. I’m not at all sure that mine are in their original positions. None of mine are bottomed out.

Same on mine I replaced the locking nut on the spare with a lug nut I grabbed at a wrecker works fine.
