You are not going to believe this
It has always bothered me the this fault was showed almost immediately after hooking up a computer to change some settings (by a friend). specifically letting the bcu (I think) know it is now coil springs not air. Obviously it bothered me that every time I changed to a new XYZ I would have the exact same symtoms. Well, we went back into the computer today and somehow my Discovery had been switched from an automatic to a manual. That would explain why the computer was not reading any signal from the XYZ as well. So, problem solved. Thank you all for your insight and help. I wanted to make sure you all knew cause it seems like so many threads just tail off without ever knowing if the issue was resolved.

Ah, but you never mentioned the rear air springs had been changed to coil springs at the outset as it's the compressor and air springs are linked to the same BCU and it will give false readings and control or whatever. The BCU needs resetting when you delete rear air springs (BCU's aren't good at guessing eh )

The springs were changed many years ago. The BCU was reset then. For some reason when I pressed the front windscreen button, I would get and error on the dash regarding the rear air suspension. The computer already was instructed that it did not have air suspension. So, are you saying the BCU can automatically switch from an Auto to a Man?

There's a beautiful thread on here where someone is installing a manual transmission in a D2.
I wonder if he knows that all you need to do is change a setting in the computer?

Hi, no, as far as I know. The transmission ECU is different from the BCU and it's the Transmission ECU that controls all the auto and tx boxes. The BCU afaik only controls the rolling chassis components.

From what you have said the BCU has already been modded for the change in air springs to coil springs so no probs there with that. |Unfortunately, like all computers, BCU's can and do go haywire from time to time, especially Landrover ones

This is by far the most entertaining conclusion I've seen to date. I love this forum exactly for stuff like this. Glad you figured it out!
