MAF Code advice
Hi,
my new to me 2001 Discover just lit up the SES light with code P0102 and P1884. According to my research these come up with a bad MAF sensor. The previous owner changed the MAF less than 1 year ago with the $38 amazon MAF. Most of the posts for code P0102 say to get a new MAF. So a few questions:
1. Given the MAF is relatively new, but not a genuine Land Rover part, is it possible something else other than a failed MAF is causing this check engine light? Anything else I should check? Cleaning the MAF perhaps?
2. Anyone had experience with this Amazon MAF where it lasted for over 1 year? Outside of getting OEM getting Bosch for $145 at bputah.com are there any other options better than the amazon one. (
Amazon.com: 2000-2004 Land Rover Discovery Mass Air Flow Sensor Meter MAF # 0280217532 ERR7171: Automotive
)
3. How big a deal is this? The truck runs great. Am I hurting anything by driving around with these codes? I've cleared the codes several times but the come back the next time I turn on the engine.
Thanks,
-Eric

The el cheapos are asking for trouble. You are only hurting mpg. You can try cleaning with made for MAF spray, only do this when engine is cold. Be glad you don't have a D1 - check the price on their MAFs.
The 1884 is a result of the problem, the engine and tranny are always talking about engine load, etc.
The P0102 is the idea that MAF measurement does not agree with what engine speed is. Of course check for any other air leaks, split hose, etc.

I wanted to follow up to this post. Cleaning the MAF did nothing to fix the problem. So, I just installed an original bosch MAF that I ordered from partsgeek.com for $100 + shipping. The SES light went away. It does appear the cheap maf's from amazon don't last very long. Pretty happy with this result and the truck drives noticeably better.
