Muffler advice?
Hello!
My muffler is splitting and needs to be replaced - I see tons of options out there and don't know what to do - people have suggested I go stainless (I'm in Canada) - others have suggested I go to a local muffler shop and get a custom fit performance muffler and new pipe and that I won't need the resonator...I like quality but I also have limited funds - also I'm not really hoping for much sound - I like quiet - but I suppose this is a minor consideration, haha.

Just replace it with a cheap direct bolt on muffler and call it good: LAND ROVER PARTS - SILENCER - INTERMEDIATE DISCOVERY II V-8 - Rovers North - Classic Land Rover Parts
My experience is that local shops did not carry my muffler in stock and the retail price was equal or more than the price from Rovers North or Atlantic British. Down fall is you have to wait a couple days to get it. But worth it. Bolts right up and it fits perfectly.
Heres now my muffler looked before I replaced it. The muffler was splitting at the weld line so I tried using muffler repair products and that did not fix the leak so I replaced with new.

I've heard the quality of the new product is considerably lower than that if the factory original. So poor in fact that they rust through within a year or two.
I would recommend getting a Borla Pro XS, or if you want something closer to factory quiet a Pro XL, and have a muffler shop weld it in. The Muffler will run you ~$100 on Amazon. You need the single in single out 2.5" pipe diameter one with the in and out being offset. Save a little money (not much, a few dollars) by cutting out the old one yourself and just drive to the exhaust shop without a muffler.
I would personally chop the resonator too, unless you just want a quiet ride. I have the Pro XS, high flow cats, and dual out with no resonators. Sounds spectacular with very little drone. With factory cats I'd say there wouldn't be any.

I did the Amazon Borla exhaust and set it in place before I cut the old one off. I tried to get the rear pipe length correct. I used a sawzall instead of a cutting torch and it worked 100 percent better! I did have a hard time finding an adapter as the rear pipe and the muffler output were the same diameter. If I did it over, I'd have gotten the straight pipe for the rear (without the resonator) and replaced the whole thing.
on my 1997 D1 (4.0) I did not need the donut for the front of the muffler. The header pipe was bell shaped.
