Default Need help with the infamous P0301

Few days ago noticed some hesitation during acceleration, loss of power. Would normally happen around 3-4th gear, 40-50mph. Would definitely notice it uphill. I had a set of new plat 4 plugs and mag 8mm wires in the garage, figured it was time to put them on the truck. Rover starts fine, idles fine. Has always been as quiet as a kitten during idle.

Well yesterday about 3 miles from the house, check engine light starts blinking and I lose all top end power. I immediately limp it back to the house and grab another car to get to work.

I get home from work, scan the codes and I get the P0301 (cyc 1 missfire). I put the 8mm wires and plugs on and clear the codes. Crank the truck up, idles fine, sounds found. Gas it a few RPMs no problem. Pull out the driveway and the check engine light comes back on and I lose power. I can definitely hear something missing, esp when you listen up at the back of the exhaust. But the code it keeps throwing is P0301. No injector fault, no coil pack fault, no o2 sensor fault.

Any suggestions on what this could be? Most definitely do no want to start throwing parts at it just guessing.

Thanks! 3 years and no major issues, had to be a WORLD RECORD! HAHA

Check in total darkness to see if any arc happens on boots, wires, coils, etc.

Coolant leak into cylinder 1?

When I did the plugs yesterday I inspected each one as I pulled them out. No leaking, they were all dry. Never had any problems with the truck overheating, again prob the only owner to ever experience no coolant leaking lol. Yeah this one is weird. I wish the cheap scanner I had was more specific. Driving me nuts. Might need to borrow a better scanner.

My plan right now is to leave it in the garage. We are in the process of selling our home and buying another home. So I do not want to start working on the thing before I get settled into a new house/garage. That would be way too stressful lol. Right now I can at least drive it in and out of the driveway, onto a tow truck to haul to the new house etc.

Gonna buy a 98' Jeep XJ (I6) hopefully on craigslist tomorrow for 1500. Will give me a second vehicle if myself or the stay home wife needs it.

How many miles on the engine? You may have a coil failing, a compression issue as in a burned valve or carbon build up or worse case a warn cam/lifter issue.

138k miles. The right coil pack (facing the truck from the front, where cyc 1 wire is) is my guess as well Mike. That will be the first thing I try once I get moved and have time to take the upper manifold off. Can you swap the packs and diagnose that way before buying a new one? Or should I just buy 2 new packs? I also noticed a few wires had a lot of corrosion on the connecters when I pulled them off the packs. Thanks for responding btw. How you doing?

A can of seafoam might be worth a shot as well. My driving patterns are drive it 15-20 miles. Then it sits for 3-4 days literally in the garage. Never thought about it that way. Heck maybe that's all it is.
