No noise without the shaft means it is not the transfer case or transmission. As stated if you can put the cdl in to the locked position either with the lever in the truck or the nipple under the truck (not running of course if you are under it) it should move without the shaft.

the 2000 should have the nipple on the top of the t-case to lock it manually, it's much easier to access with the front shaft out especially the first couple of times you try to do it.

Do you push or pull? I felt something but I couldn't move it.

Also, while I was down there cleaning, found the starter heat shield was loose but I remember there was vibration also when stopping or slowing down.

Still waiting for the shaft and fluids, I'll update everyone if that fixes it.

The nipple on top of the t-case will lock the CDL with about an eight of a turn towards the passenger side with a 10mm spanner.

You got a photo? I’m trying to figure it out. Found a 10mm on top but I couldn’t move it at all.

The "nipple" is the piece sticking up towards the front of the unit in that photo, poking through the round cover with three bolts holding it in place.

Thank you.

That is difficult to access. I will just wait tomorrow to install my new shaft and go from there first.

Plan -
Install front shaft to see if any noise. If there's still noise.
Change fluid on both diff. Check again.
Then change fluid on transmission.

It should be really easy to access if your front shaft is out. Maybe try it when you swap them over just so you can confirm that it's functional.
