I had stuck bolts too. I though hammering my half inch ratchet would work. No dice. I bought a 18in breaker bar (And a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter if you need) and they came off like they were bolted to a stick of butter. Oh, and make sure they're rotating the correct direction, remember it is reversed since the bolt head is opposite you.

To answer your question, no you can't do the job without taking the 19mm 12pt bolts off. They are what bolt the carrier to the axle/knuckle/spindle/whatever they happened to be bolted to on these trucks. If you want to take the rotor off you must take the carrier off.

I'm a little late to this thread, but if you are going to the trouble of replacing all those parts I'd recommend replacing the six rubber brake hoses too.

If you have a propane torch handy, heat the bolts up a bit first. that will break the rust that is locking them up.
