Default New guy, New (sort of) Disco II - Couple of questions

Pulled the trigger yesterday, bought a 2004 HSE7 with 87k miles.

Seems to be in pretty good shape overall, looks well taken care of. Drips a bit of oil at the back of the engine. Rear main seal was replaced at 33k, but looks like it might need it again.

Already planning to do the fluids this week, getting ready to order the new front drive shaft and probably an UltraGauge as well so I can keep an eye on the temps. I'll eventually get to the head gaskets and hopefully rear main seal, but will probably wait until Spring when it warms up.

So - a few questions:

I drove my car out to make the purchase, so I towed it 900+ on a U-Haul behind the Disco to get back home. I was really surprised by the mileage. I got over 12 mpg towing my car through some pretty hilly roads in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado. Is that normal? I was expecting single digits.

The front windshield wipers don't return to the bottom of the windshield. When they're on intermittent or when you turn them off, they just seem to stop in the middle of the stroke. I have to use the "mist" lever to get them to go back down all the way. Any ideas how to fix that?

Thanks in advance

-Tim

Wiper motor. Maybe 17 mpg not towing. White Shepherd / Blue Devil oil leak product for rear seal.

No, not Blue Sherherd, get there rear engine main sealer, may have to order it on line.
Also, check out my major service list at the top of this section. Who's drive shaft are you going to buy?

Hey Tim, (wiper)
I had similar wiper symptoms that occurred when the weather turned cold.
I found after removing and dismantling the column switch itself, that the grease they used was all gummed up on the contacts. Cleaned the old stuff out and worked like a charm.
I too could get the wipers all the way down using the mist feature.
Worth checking out before diving to deep into other parts? Mine stopped working like clock work when it got cold. (In the summer in Denver it worked fine) Might be able to use a blow dryer to warm the switch once you remove the steering column shroud and see if it then wants to work?
Search ....
"Wiper switch fix "...on this site and see what I mean
Don't think there is much difference between the 04 and my 01?
If it goes beyond this, There are guys here that know EVERYTHING!
Hope it works.

Mike -

I did check out your service list, that was a big help. I plan to go through the whole list, it'll just be after the Holidays before I can get to the major stuff. Was planning to get the driveshaft from Drew (lr2001silver), unless you have another recommendation. So which rear main seal product works best?

CANAM - That's great news, I'll give it a shot and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for the advice!
