Default Odd noise from in front of dash

Morning,

I have a 2003 Disco. Recently it has started making a noise from near the fire wall behind the dash when I start it. The sound is like the sound of a jet engine spooling up or a vacuum pump that is sick. It lasts for about 45 seconds then stops. I am not a mechanic so I will be taking my car to a local shop but wanted to get a guess as to what it might be. Anyone have any ideas?

Under the hood on the passenger side of the engine compartment is the electric secondary air injection pump. SAI system boosts air into the exhaust area to more thoroughly burn fuel in cold startup, about 45 seconds. Sounds like a hair dryer when the pump begins to go. It is an emissions device, so un-plugging it will lead to a engine code eventually. You can get new or used. Keep in mind that a used one will have a shorter life than a new one, it runs every cold startup. $300 ish new. Dismantler's like Paul Grant can sell you one that isn't making noise also.

Unit has a plastic cover that pops off and a foam filter, might try clean that first. Lube is not much of an option according to more senior members.

Pix from shop manual attached. Free download of shop manual in my signature, handy to have on a USB drive in the glove box.

Thanks! I assume that this replacing it would also help with gas mileage?

No. Rolling down hill helps. It is over two tons, with 215 cubic inch motor and the aerodynamics of a brick.

Default Same Loud Noise

Hi all,

I just bought my 03 DISCO last April. First time Land Rover owner. Within three weeks of purchase I have had oil pump blow and destroy my entire engine. So haven't had it but just about a month to myself to fix small things. First thing I tackled was the secondary air pump noise. I watched this video that showed how to check the filter.

Once I opened it up the foam filter was basically disintegrated. I removed and blew out. Started it up...no more noise. Maybe I got lucky not sure.

My question though to others. May be stupid, but can I drive the DISCO without that foam filter for awhile to I can locate a place to purchase another one. And second, where the heck do I find one. So far no luck in a brief search online.

Thanks I look forward to utilizing this site a ton as I learn everything about my new Land Rover.
