I'm with White Rover, if he has the non-serviceable prop-shaft, he should get it out ASAP regardless.

Do that anyway (before it explodes and ruins the tranny), then see if it takes the noise away at the same time.

Especially if he is at 272km, 167k miles..

Open the oil fill plug on the transfer case. Make sure it is filled to the top.
Make sure the oil is clean.

You could put 90W synthetic into the transfer case.
That may help it.

any chance it could just be the pavement on that particular hill? OP did state that it only happens on that one particular hill.. just a thought.

Thanks for the replies
1) It's not the prop shaft. This ain't my first rodeo
2) The gear oils in the diffs and t-case have all been changed recently
3) Transmission fluid and filter changed recently
4) It's not the pavement. It happens on two hills by my house, I just didn't want to confuse people with extraneous info about the geographical features of my neighborhood.

Since posting, I haven't been able to re-create the noise. I think this is because it has been getting warmer here. It may get cold again tomorrow so I'll try it again.

Thanks again!

Another unidentifiable disco sound/vibration.

Dane.. I would figure that a bad different would make noise constantly.. no? Under power and off. Probably make different sounds but... still make a noise. Could.be wrong. I drove a 97 grand Cherokee with a bad diff.. made noise all over. Dude told me he just serviced it. Lol.
