Hello, i am new to the discovery 2
today i did my first oil change on the D2, I drained the oil first, put the plug back in, added 1 gallon (3.78L) then took out the oil filter, added oil into the new oil filter about 3/4 of the way, put the oil filter in, checked the dip stick just in case and saw nothing on it, put another gallon (3.78L) to top it off, checked the dip stick and the oil is BARELY on the tip. Now i am super confused because the manual says it takes 5.8L for oil change and filter and i put in about 7L
started the vehicle, oil light was on for about ten seconds then went away, kept it running for ten minutes, checked for leaks, nothing. Went on a short drive around the neighborhood didn't hear any weird sounds nor any lights popped up. checked for leaks again and yet nothing and still my dip stick has oil only on the tip !!! i do not know what to do, any suggestions? should i keep adding until i see the dip stick level required reached ?
The driveway is a flat surface btw
i noticed the rubber was all sort of melted prior to changing oil but i do not think it is the issue because there was not a
ny visible leaks
Unless the stick looks altered I would let it cool down and add more in, I would do about a half quart at a time. When I last changed mine it looked low, I added some(too much, noob mistake), it looked over filled, I drained a little. It is easier to drain a little and take note of what it took than to deal with low oil issues.
I am a paranoid person about engine oil levels so I just add oil level that into my sunday morning checks, along with before and after longer trips. Like you I am new so until I develop a sense about it I will stick with that.
I guess, if you put in more than 7 liters, you have a bum dipstick. Judging from the way the filler neck is stripped and glued on, it wouldn't surprise me if the PO messed up the dipstick too.

You're also removing the wrong part to fill it. That tube is supposed to stay in place. The cap on the end of it is the part that you're meant to unscrew.

I've had them so locked on that the cap won't unscrew. Under up breaking the neck to get it apart from the cap on that one.
