I guess it seems better to have oil flowing over all the moving parts before even turning it. I understand there will be less trauma if its not actually running, but seems like any part on part friction is better with lube.

Got that, just do not like (1) the state of that substance at room temperature aka 68 degrees F, and (2) the fact it is not intended or engineered to be an engine internal lubricant. I'll probably stick with the proper assembly grease and (thank you) change the oil at 500 miles from conventional 5W-30 to T6.

 

the state of the substance is why your pump primes so quickly, other wise they would say use oil. and if you putting a motor back together you should be changing it out after 500 miles no matter what oil you are using.

 

Sure, I get that. Given a choice between something women use to remove makeup versus something designed for use in an internal combustion engine I'm more comfortable with the latter.

 

I did the Vaseline in the pump method. I highly recommend. I recently made friends with a LR tech with 14 years experience on LRs, and he says to use Vaseline. Just in the pump, I packed it full! Thought it was overkill, but it got pressure instantly. This was the second time I did the pump, the first time used assembly lube and got no pressure( I did make other mistakes though).
