Ok, check this out!!
hello again all, i still have my ticking problem and i think its either coming from the a/c compressor or the alternator. the thing is that im not losing any power or voltage and battery is being drained at all, but i did notice a pulley beneath the alt. that had some play in it. it looks like some sort of tensioner pulley and im not sure if its supposed to have some flexibility or play in it. now the a/c compressor after doing the ear to screwdriver test didnt seem like it was coming from there too much but more on the alternator, however, my climate control only goes to 28 and then high and not the usual 72 or 73 that it was set on before. i do get heat but its hot as hell and even though i try to lower the temp, its still too hot. i did disconnect the battery a couple of times to do my plugs . i dont have any leaks, no overheating and no weird smells. my question is, can a alternator make that constant ticking sound in sync with the rpm? and can it be going bad and still give good voltage with no drain? i would really appreciate an explanation for this. thanx again guys.
For the ticking problem, with engine cold (not run for several hours), remove belt and start engine to see if ticking has stopped. Do not run engine too long or it will overheat with the water pump not turning. With belt off, spin each pulley by hand to see which one makes noise, or has any kind of play.
The climate control center is reading in Celsius instead of Fahrenheit like before. Press and hold the recirculate button and press the power button at the same time to switch back to Fahrenheit.
When you lower the temperature on the HVAC, does the A/C compressor engage? If the compressor is running, and you still have hot air blowing from the vents, you could have a stuck door in the HVAC system causing air to only be directed through the heater core.

Any kind of wobble with belt on is also a suspect item. The high heat is from causes listed by lordmorpheus, because the coolant always flows through the heater core on a D2, even in Miami in the summer time. If a blend door gets stuck, you're in for a hot time. Hopefully the tick goes away with belt off.
If not, one "tick" source is a cracked oil pump, which is just behind the front cover. Manual gauge oil PSI test will show up off normal. Another source is the flex plate that couples engine to tranny being cracked.

wow, great information and quick response, thanx guys. no, i didnt do a oil pressure test yet, i figured it was ok because i havent had any oil light or problems with the oil. i changed it about a week ago and the old oil still looked good and the truck just turned 100,000 mi a couple of months ago. i was just wondering if a faulty alternator could make that kinda tick and still put out decent voltage with no battery drain. i will check the oil pressure a.s.a.p
I didn't have any problems with my oil light either. However my outer oil pump ring was in 5 pieces! Oil will not be dirty or anything. Truck will still drive good, etc.
Check that oil pressure as soon as you get a chance. This is very important on 2003.

ok, i have another question. i think the noise might be the water pump. i did the heat resetting thing and the a/c compressor is fine. it cools and everything. my question is, can a water pump tick like that and still not leak or overheat? could the bearings be on their way out or loose or something like that? oh and thanx again on that climate control issue!! the impeller sounds like its hitting against something as it is in sync with the rpms, is that possible?, thanx again guys.
yes,
It is possible for the water pump to make noise, if you grab the front does it wobble from side to side. If so, the bearing is gone and the impeller is hitting the water pump or timming case cover.
I think Buzz has a picture of a bad one that he throw up from time to time. Disco Mike had just put up a posting for what looked like a really good quiality one that he found at British part of Utah.

Read my post on why not to buy from British Parts of Utah. Then think about it..... Just looking out for YOU.
