Buckeye did you figure it out? 29 seconds is an eternity at startup. I bought a new phone so I could listen and I hear a slight whine and some exhaust sound.

If it is the whine, enjoy it. I replaced a bunch of pulleys on mine because I couldn't find the whine and it did two things. First, I lost that cool Starship Enterprise sound that I'd had since new. Second and much worse I could hear all of the other clatter much more clearly.

If it is the exhaust don't worry. The gaskets heat up and seal a little better. You'll know whether that is it if you warm it up, shut it off, and you don't hear the noise when you turn it back on. If so you have a bolt or two looser than the others or the surfaces are quite parallel, or maybe gouged a tiny bit. If that's all you have wrong go buy a lottery ticket!

I haven't I am guessing it is a bad manifold gasket

Dang I'm always correcting my posts when the response comes.

I've reused the exhaust gaskets just by spraying copper coat on them. A Disco will nickel and dime you to death.

Take heart. I painted my engine and it still runs like crap.

I really thought the paint would bring it in line. Polish on a turd.

Not really driving it right now until I have the coin for new wires and coils and valve cover gaskets. The # 5 and 6 misfire has me intrigued because they are right next to each other but different colis. I think tomorrow night I am going to mist the wires to see if I have and fireworks. I reconnected the spark indicator and both 5 and 6 show strong continuous spark.

The painted engine (above) has a persistent misfire that I'm ridding in another thread, and I've almost decided that I have bent valves due to an unfortunate and stupid act on my part of turning the crank by hand without the timing chain on. I was tired and not thinking. If you run out of ideas I will have done a compression and leak down test in the cylinders by then and may be able to contribute some low budget way of conducting those tests (because that's my budget for the Disco these days). I doubt you have a bent valve but a burnt valve is possible if you have eliminated everything else and the test would find it.

I can't recall whether you have done a compression test on those cylinders. Have you?

Quick update,
After cleaning the IAC and installing it correctly the idle is much smoother but not perfect. I went out last night with a mister to focus on #5 and #6 wires. Sure enough I saw some sparks on both right were the boot meets the wire. I ordered a new set of wires and I am going to try and change them without removing the upper intake.

I've done it before. It is the worst job on a land rover. It can be done. Find something long to pop the coil connectors off because finger muscles just don't work that way. Also, it helps if you wear surgical gloves and grease them. No kidding.

Good job finding the cross fire between the wires!
