I know how to work on the car I can change the HG's and probably swap the engine out the only thing is I do not have time with my work and school schedule
Is the p38 4.6 the same engine block as my 2003 discovery 2? Because it's the first thing that came up when I searched for a p38 rover lol

I'll research the P38's thanks!
The 4.0 and 4.6 Bosch engines are the same, with the 4.6 having different crank and rods.
The P38 is the factory's 4.6 "A" rated quality, and went into the Range Rovers only. The B and C rated quality went into D2's. P38 4.6's last year was 02.
By 03/04 (the last 2 years of the 4.6), quality and condition of the block molds supposedly suffered, resulting in off center castings, which means a water jacket wall may be thick on one side and thin on the other...resulting in weak spots that can crack after overheating.
I have an 04, and 3 cylinders decided to leak coolant(comes between block and cylinder sleeve) After I rebuilt it, so I feel your pain.
I got a 4.0 block, as they are earlier models with less problems. I'm in the process of swapping my 4.6 guts into the 4.0 block now.
So that's an option too if you had the time.
I had a factory replacement 4.6 installed in 2007, under warranty. It cracked and leaked into #5 at about 150k miles on it. Never once overheated it. Always burned oil.
Hey, OP, I just realised that you may not be too far away from me. I'm nearly done harvesting from my parts truck, which has a decent, running 4.0L in it with 176k miles. I only stopped driving that truck because the suspension needed all new bushings and there was some frame rot. I did the head gaskets less than 1k miles before I parked it. I've already taken a lot of pieces out of the engine bay (radiator, brake systems, etc.) so the engine should be easy to pull.
Anyway, you can have the entire truck including its engine if you want it.
Thanks for the suggestions and @mollusc that is a good deal I might have to take you up on that 👍
How difficult will it be to get the 4.0 to work in my 2003? I had both of my 4.6 cylinder heads resurfaced with new valve guides two weeks ago when we did the head gasket job, will they still be good in the 4.0?
total I'm down 4k with the truck, I was debating Scrapping it last night and saving up for something new but I've had great memories towing things around with my old 2000 disco and this one is so much cleaner and no rust, it would be a shame to junk it
The difference in the 4.0 and 4.6 is crank and rods.
Otherwise the same.
That 4.0 will look and bolt in just the same.
If he's close to you, you should jump on that awesome offer.
Hey I found this really interesting 3 minute video from Cummins. It showcases a land rover discovery and it seems like a 2003+ model based on the headlights.
they repowered it with a Cummins 2.8 and they're making it seem like it's a simple plug and play conversion.
I'm sure that's not the case but let's say money aside how feasible will this be?
