I can't even get the d@mn heat shield off. I think it's gonna be a long day.

Just pull the heat shield toward the fender. It has spring clips that just slid around the starter and will pop off. It will still be connected at the motor mount (front) but that won't stop you. That will reveal the top bolt for the starter.

The bottom bolt is easiest with long socket extensions--I think I use about 18 inches--and you loosen it while laying under the truck with your head toward the bumper. Hard on your neck. You'll need a flashlight, too, even if the sun is out because the bottom bolt is really tucked away.

I'd do the bottom bolt first because if the top is off the starter will flop down on your socket and obstruct your view as you remove the bottom bolt.

For your purposes I'd leave the wires connected. But don't let the starter fall too far because a knock sensor wire comes out of the same loom and it will be hanging considerable weight from that sensor. Or just squeeze the plastic clip on the front of that sensor and lower everything.

You can do the two bolts with regular Allen wrenches instead of Allen sockets but it takes forever to get them out.

Here is the front bolt on the motor mount.

Here is the spring clip. Just pull.

Very very nice outcome. Congratulations! A starter.

Keep a hammer in the truck. If it ever quits, just take it to an alternator/starter shop and they will make it new.
