Guys,
After reading all this argument today. I figured out the best way to change the power steering fluid on my 2003. I don't know if the steering box is the same for a DI. First keep your wife's turkey baster in the kitchen drawer.
  • Clean off the top of the reservoir with clean rag.
  • Locate the bleeder nut on top of the steering box visible from above. You will need to remove the air intake hose.
  • Get a 11mm socket and combine 2 long extensions to get about 16inches of length.
  • Now get your pump that you use to change Transfer case fluid. Put the short clear pickup tube on the bottom.
  • Get your oil pan and set it on top of your air filter box.
  • Now use your pump and pump out all the old power steering fluid from the reservoir. You will need to tilt it toward the front of the car to get all the old fluid in the front chamber.
  • Now fill it 1 inch over the Max line with new power steering fluid.
  • Get your large extension socket ready. Gently unloosen the bleeder screw9counter clockwise). Mine had a plastic cap over it. Now attach small rubber hose to it, long enough to reach to your use old pan. Carefully lay shop rags around it. Make that bleeder nut barely finger tight. Watch your hands its 3 inches away from a turning pulley and fan!
  • Put the hose in your oil used oil pan
  • Start the Rover
  • unloosen your bleeder screw by hand with the hose on it(car running)
  • You should see old fluid coming out in the pan.
  • Run until your see clean fluid.
  • Top off your reservoir.
  • I used Royal purple. You can use any full synthetic power steering fluid.
  • I figured good enough for racing is good enough for Rovin!

Hi all. I'm considering doing a Power Steering Fluid Flush and Fill on my '04 DII. I've got just under 90k miles on it. Mind you, I've never even done an oil change before so a mechanic I am not, lol. But, you guys make it look so easy! So, when bosshogt says to do this

Now get your pump that you use to change Transfer case fluid. Put the short clear pickup tube on the bottom.

Is there an alternative if I don't have this pump?

Yep, just pull off lower line on plastic tank and drain into suitable cup, etc. Important points include: With this method you never let the pump run "dry", be sure to keep eyeball on tank level and don't let it run out. If you are doing this on a D1 be sure to use ATF for fluid, not power steering fluid (D1 = ATF, D2 = power steering fluid). Attached d2 drawing

Not having a D2, I would hazard a guess that it is a crimp on clamp, so you could buy a hose clamp. But at Auto Zone they will sell the handy pump for maybe $7, and you will use it for several other places to deal with fluids. No high pressure there, just gravity.
