I think I am having the same issue. This darn truck. I would like to know how to determine if it is the actual pump failing or a leaky hose. What is the best way to tell this? I just want to make sure I don't buy something I don't need. I did not see a sticky or write up on this, but I may have overlooked it. So how can I tell how to determine if I just need hoses or if the pump is bad? Can I use just any brake fluid? The Atlantic British guy said that Land Rover makes specially formulated PS fluid. Is that true?
When I turn the wheels it makes a straining noise, not grinding. Wheeeehhhhhhhh...... Please help and thank you!!

Don't use brake fluid in your PS.

You can use ATF or PS fluid. I can't imagine why it would have to be Rover-specific fluid, either.

the groan is sort of normal.

I disassembled my pump and used ultra black gasket maker on the plastic gasket...it still doesn't leak and I did this 2-3 years ago.

I have bought 2 more junkyard pumps since then...thought I would need them but guess not.

as for your leak, spray everything down with a good cleaner, simple green, carb cleaner etc get it good and clean and dry, then see if you can notice where the leak is coming from.

Our rover doesn't groan anymore but I change the fluids, all of them, every year. I just did the brake fluid last week with new rotors and pads. Pedal is right at the top, stops nice and if you press on the brakes to hard you'll go to the windshield.
