Power steering whine on Disco 2
Hello,
after about 30 minutes of driving, my power steering pump (probably) started to whine when turning, along with my shifter being hard to move from side to side. It still go perfectly into a gear though, noises and shifter stiffness get worse the longer I drive it. If I let the car sit for about 20 minutes, it gets better but once driven couple kilometres, it is back. It does work absolutely fine when cold for first 20-30minutes. I got 2002 Discovery TD5, with ACE. I wonder if there is any chance that shifter is somehow connected with power steering or anything related to it. If anyone can diagnose this problem, please, do that.

So manual transmission? Power steering sounds are likely from air in the fluid - might be low on fluid? You should be able to bleed it to get the air out, run a hose from the bleed nipple to the tank, crack open the bleed nipple and turn it left to right until it goes away.
Thanks for answer,
yes, it is manual transmission. I got both power steering and ACE tanks on the level, though they might want a change, oil smells a bit burned. Thing which worries me the most is that stiff shifter, but both those problems appeared at the same day and exact same time, so it must be related somehow. I will give it a shot bleeding the system, or rather changing the fluid while doing it. But I am not sure it is the case, as it whine only once it gets hot.

Manual shifter linkage is unrelated. It is all internal to gearbox. It is possible could be lack of lube but I woudl expect hte transmission to be howling if the trans is low of fluid. I guess it is possible the fluid is low enough to keep the transmission lubed but not the shifter linkage.
Thanks for help, but I checked the transmission fluid first, as it came to my mind that it must be low on oil. I opened that filler/level plug at the side and oil started pouring right out. The pump is howling even when turning steering wheel with vehicle parked, without transmission moving. Also it appear only when fluids gets to working temperatures, if there was no lube on linkage it would happen all the time I guess, not only when fluid is hot....

I drove my disco today, without any problems. Did not drive more than 20 kilometres though, so it was still "cold". I ordered some original transmission fluid together with power steering and ACE fluids, gonna change those first and hopefully it will work. Oil in the transmission have sort of gray color, not really transparent, so it definitely deserve a change. I also checked power steering pump for any wobbles on pulley, or leaks. There are none, except one hose that go from the power steering pump, there is some oil on it, but as I heard, LR that is not leaking any fluids is not a land rover after all.
So I flushed power steering system and changed oil in my gearbox and all the problems are gone now. I hope it was not too late for gearbox, there were some metal flakes inside the old oil, but it looked it was not changed for a while. Will see down the road. Thanks everyone for advices.
