Default Problems with heater

I have a 2004 Discovery II HSE. Just last week I noticed a whining noise behind the passenger side dash, sounded like a belt slipping. At about the same time the heat stopped working when the truck was not moving. When the truck is moving it works like an inferno but as soon as the vehicle stops moving (stop light, etc.) it blows cold almost like it is venting from the outside. Not even sure where to start. Does anyone have any ideas?

Is the passenger floorboard wet? Do you smell coolant?

You probably have 2 issues, a coolant leak and a blower motor problem.
As for the coolant issue, when was the last time you added or checked your coolant, when it was stone cold? Pretty common problem with a Rover, could be a minor leak or the dreaded blown head gasket.

I do smell coolant and will check the level. As far as the blower motor, is that behind the dash or accessible under the hood? Also, what would other symptoms be for the blown head gasket?

Don't worry about the blower motor and don't even drive the truck till you find and fix the coolant leak or you could be in the market for a replacement mote before next year.
If you need help with this, send me your number and I'll call you.

Thanks Mike, I appreciate the help. Looks like I'll be heading to the garage.

Keep checking the floorboard for wetness.
