Default Pulling Transfer Case to Reseal

So today is the day I am going to pull my transfer case to replace the main seal. I was reading a few forum post and noticed on an older discovery that a guy had a service hatch under either the console or driver seat. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a service hatch for 2003 land rover discovery?

And if anyone has any tips on changing this seal please fill free to pipe in.

Thanks,

J

If you remove the console you can get to the top of the t-case.

I've got to play devil's advocate here, is the rear main leaking? After I pulled my t-case I was a few bolts short of the transmission.... And while I have a tranny jack, air tools and a lift at my disposal it was only another hour to seperate it from the bell and replace the RMS. Just say'in....

Exactly what seal is leaking? Why not try some White Shepard to stop the leak instead of pulling it all down?

Mike, the leak was really bad when I drove on the highway gear oil was all over my back window. I worked on it all night last night, I am having trouble getting the hi/lo cable off the RAVE CD says to pull the clevis pin put it is really hard to get to. When you pull a t-case do you normally pull the shifter to access the top of the case?

Also when I pull the t-case off is it okay to put a jack stand on the transmission oil pan for support?

Thanks for the help,

J

If you pull the console out, its MUCH easier to see all the bits you need to disconnect, inparticular the top bolts / transfer lever / linkage etc....it also allows light to come through the hole in the tunnel and just generally makes the hole job better.

And yes it would be fine supporting the gearbox on the oil pan, maybe put a small piece of wood between the stand and the pan tho.

Might pull Josh's write up on removing the console to remove the cable, should be on the top on the Disco section.

Thanks for the help much appreciated, one more quick question. I was told it is easier to pull the T-case if you pull PTO cover off and pull out the gear along with the out put shaft from the Tranny? If that is the case when I put the gear back in is their any specs I need to be aware of like the exact placement or measuring with shims or does it just stabs back on the shaft and seal it up.

Not sure, I haven't heard of anyone else doing it that way.
Do yourself a favor and replace the rear seal on the tranny while you have it apart, might also consider up-grading to a 75W/140 gear oil when refilling.
