Default Question about longevity of the Discovery

As you can probably already tell, I'm new to this forum. I've been wanting to get a Discovery for quite sometime now. Everytime I'm looking to get one I hear how they are so expensive to get fixed. How I can go in for a routine oil change and leave spending $1000 for something that is wrong with it. I've been looking at the 94-present Discovery. I want to spend somewhere between $5000-$7000. I've been seeing them around for that much with about 90k-120k miles on it. Obviously the lower the miles, the better. Now please give me your most unbiased opinion on the Discovery and its require maintenence. I don't know a ton about doing the maintenence myself so all maitenence will be done by a mechanic. I just want to know everyone's experience with their Discovery and what not. Thanks a lot. Hopefully this will help me make my purchase.

Well, you've asked quite a bit...I think everyone can agree, owning an LR isn't like any other vehicle. God knows that other vehicles are expensive to work on however, with a disco, you can't just run to autozone and pick up the standard parts. As long as you can find a disco with good service records and it has been upkept, you should be fine. These vehicles are fickle things, however, they'll go anywhere you point them, be proactive. The biggest issues are usually electrical, window regulators and the motor, the sunroof. Leaking a/c return lines, vaccuum hoses, anything rubber you can find, change it unless you know it's already been done. Changing the brakes isn't that big of a deal, don't go to the dealer, you can find pretty much everything you need from Atlantic British a lot less.

Default RE: Question about longevity of the Discovery

welcome. I have a 96 with 130k, owned since 7k. 10 years 5000.00 parts and maintanence. I have kept mine well maintained. 500.00/year including brakes and tires is not bad. The other reply listed has the common problem list. I agree that records are a necessary thing when buying a rover. If you buy, I hope you enjoy. Hope it helps, gotta love a rover. duboff
