Default questions about cleaning my engine

Hey everyone,
I was detailing my truck after some mudding from last weekend and after I was done I popped the hood and found that it is pretty muddy under there as well.

How do I go about washing my engine?
Is it bad to just open up and spray water in there?
Is there a productthat I shouldspray on the engine first?

FYII have a 03' disco. Thanks much!

On D2's you can power scrub that crap out of them with no issues, I do mine after every trail or at least once a monthe, and have been for nearly 5 years, boy is it clean.

Thanks Mike! Do you spray any type of cleaner in the engine to loosen things up? Or do you just go at it with the hose?

This is a good question. I've sprayed mine w/ a hose, but have been leary about using the idustrial engine cleaners. The chemicals are very strong and penetrating, and using them frequently on the Disco due to already leaky seals and gaskets may not be such a good idea. I think hosing off the top end and powerwashing the bottom is the way to go.

After the first good cleaning of my engine, where I did use some spray Gunk before pressure washing the engine, I have only had to use the rince mode at the do it yourself car wash. My engine stays looking just like new.

Is it the same for a 99 Disco 1? Can I just hose that engine down too?

Disco Mike,
When you powerwash are you used the power rine function at a DIY car wash or do you have a pressure washer at home and if so what psi are you using to avoid damagin any engine parts?

Many Thanks in advance!

With a Disco 1, you must watch out for the ECU located on the fire wall near the glove box. That is the one area you must watch out for, some people just wrapr them in plastic and go to gleaning.
Any D2 can be wash with soap if you want the full pressure power rinse. They look so much cleaner afterwards and if someone wants to look at your engine, for whatever reason, they are always amazed.
