Rad Job Done - For Now?
There's always got to be an opening at the end of a movie for a sequel. Well - I managed to crunch a few fins on my rad with the upper fan cowl. It's a postage-stamp size area - and I ran the system up to temp / pressure without leaks afterwards. Honestly I've done much worse than that just going down the road, but I still had to grumble a bit... Looks like damage was just fins... Man are those things THIN....
Upon cleanup / inspection after first run I noticed I had to add more oil than I'm used to. I figure some of this is the Mobil 301 filter and some from draining the cooler completely. I did go to Rotella 15/40 as some here have suggested.
I still need to top off the transmission but I was able to run through gears without issue.
Initially I was freaked out - I saw what I thought was a new leak of both engine and trans fluid! It was right under the passenger side fittings for both coolers and I was pretty frustrated (hence not watching the cowl more closely when removing!). However, it looks like it was just some trapped fluid from the initial tear-down. When the engine bay heated up it wanted a way out. There was never more than a dime - size spot on the floor.
The underside of both connectors are dry, on both sides.
I did notice what I can only guess is wire from the frame welder protruding from the top of my frame rail? Also one of the frame-welded tie-downs is welded with a nice bead on one half of the loop, the bead for the other half completely missed the tie - by like 1/8th or more of an inch. Seems it wasn't a good day on the frame line..?
I'll report temps when I can. Old Dex-cool, plugged up leaking radiator out and 180 degree t'stat with new radiator in, using the geen stuff from Peak.

HVAC techs use coil "combs" to straighten out folded over fins. You can use anything from a utility knife blade to something made for the work. If it is not leaking you did no damage. And a postage stamp size area is no matter, unless within the radius of the fan clutch.
As for bad day on the line, Sonnsworth in quality control was distracted by the view of spandex and previously hidden tatt on Helga across the line picking up a dropped oil pump gear (all are drop tested and only ones that crack are installed)...
