Default Radio head/deck swap

Sorry if this has been posted before but I was t able to find anything using search on my iphone. I am wanting to install an aftermarket radio deck on my 2001 disco ii. It has the HK setup. I talked to a friend of mine that has done care audio install for years and he basically said it requires some custo fab. Is the factor radio already a single DIN size, and there's just a gap left below? Does someone make a wiring harness? He also mentioned there might possibly be an optical audio cable running from the head down to the amp. I've installed hundreds of audio systems in cars before, just never on a disco 2. Is there a write up already done for this? I'm only looking to be able to tie my iphone headphone audio in, so even if it's running through the factory head unit somehow that would be fine. Thanks a bunch in advance.

Here is another option since you are open to keeping the stock setup. I installed a GROM Audio Bluetooth Hands Free Car Adapter Kit after reading about it elsewhere on the forum. I retained the stock system except for the CD changer. Both phone and audio playback work very well with my iPhone 5s and I bought the charging and aux-in cable to make it easy to connect a portable Sirius tuner if I want to. If you only need audio (no phone) then there is also the AUX-IN Android iPod Bluetooth Adapter.

So, looking at that Grom kit it basically gets plugged into the jack that was previously used for the CD player input, correct?

Yes, it takes the place of the CD changer connector on the back of the head unit. Steering wheel controls, including next and previous still work. The HU display does not show track information or even accurate track numbers.

So my latest issue with this project... I got the proper radio keys and they didn't work to get the head unit out. Took it to the local custom shop which I know is 100% professional and he also couldn't get the head unit out using the standard rover keys. He said that most likely when the previous owner (who ran a bunch of CB radio stuff behind the dash) took it out he probably bent the release pins so now the head unit won't slide out. Does anyone have any experience with another way to get this deck out? It's always the things that should take 5 minutes that end up being the biggest pain in the butt.
