This thing overheated very badly to the point black smoke came up through the cab. When cooled it would still run, but it is clanking and making lots of noise..

 

I never got around to doing the engine work but now I am looking to get into it. So my last post on this thread didn't get a response, but I feel a new engine is my route as the last time I drove it, it overheated so badly that black smoke came up through the floor into the cab. I can still get the engine to run, but it bangs and makes lots of noise, so I'm assuming I've done some serious damage to it.

But do you guys still think the block is salvageable and I should tear down the top part and evaluate that situation first?

 

That sounds serious. maybe drop the oil pan and see what the has fallen out. Or just get one from a junk yard, they are pretty cheap. I personally would rebuild a junk yard engine. mostly bc i enjoy the work and out of the truck it is much easier and cheaper.

 

Gonna have to pull the engine and see whats damaged, sounds like you spun a rod bearing.

 

not so long ago Will Tillery had some 4.6 engines for sale. Not sure what, if any, he has left.

 

just saw an 04 motor for $800 on Facebook. search Chris M Ruts on the Land Rover owners group Facebook page. it's a stock, white 04.

Other options are turner engineering (short block, non-flanged liners only right now I believe), the wedge shop, or a used motor from Will Tillery, who I would trust more than anyone else selling a used, takeout motor.

 

I went with an AB long block for my ‘00 Disco. Had
my local Indy shop install it. Top hat sleeves, all new hoses, Extinct inline thermostat, very pleased. There was an issue with the front seal install alignment, not my Indy shop’s fault, but the AB builder. AB stood behind it and picked up the repair cost.
