Default Rear main seal

Hi , I have a Disco 2 4.0 with what it looks like a rear main seal leak . I am getting ready to replace it and I know there is some other seals above the rear main seal when you take off the tranny. I am just wondering , what should I all replace when I take the tranny off and what's the best site to get the parts ? Thanks

You should do the PCV mod in the sticky section first. And depending on where you live step up to 20w50 motor oil (if you haven't yet). Then reassess the leak. If you are dropping the pan then the crucifix seals are good to also replace but that's a little more involved. You want to look for the seals that are a full cross and not a straight piece with little nubs. Make sure you use the correct sealant on the pan gasket, in the correct places as well. With the Y pipe down I would also do all four O2 sensors. There are lots of suppliers out there and at this point none really stand out as better if you know what you're looking for. You also get what you pay for so keep that it mind. Lots of really cheap OEM crap out there.

Edit: These are leaky engines. Check to make sure everything else around it is tight too. Pan bolts, oil filter filter housing bolts, front cover bolts, cooler connections (or plugs), etc.

I have had two engines that have leaked at the rear cam plug, they drip straight down on the crankshaft so it looks like it is a rear main seal.

Almost impossible for the rear main seal to leak, as I explained here: https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...e2/#post711847

Huh, what do you do if the plug is the leak source?

At that point its a bit of a quandry. You can't knock it in to grab it because the cam is in the way. No real way to get it out. The oil is under pressure at that rear cam journal so unlikely that you putting sealant on the top of it would stop the leak. The plug is steel and the block aluminum so welding it in is not gonna work. I kinda doubt JB weld would seal due to the oil pressure. Have you considered pulling the engine instead of the trans?

If it was my truck I would exhaust all other possibilities including PCV mod and making absolutely sure the head, intake, and valve covers are not leaking. All of those present as rear main leak because the drip runs down to the same area. Clean the areas good with brake cleaner, oven cleaner, purple power, rags, etc. Make sure it is not one of those three. If it still leaks and you really want to fix it, drop the pan and do the crucifix seals. If it still leaks, I would pull the engine before I pulled the trans. At least then it is easy to do all the engine stuff you would like to.

I would get the Awesome stuff from the dollar store. it is the best cleaner i have found, spray everything down, let it soak and wash it down to see where the leak is really coming from. The PCV mod is a non-brainer, $5 fix that you should do first. Rovers always leak, I would fix what you can and not worry about the rest unless you are getting large drips on your drive way. Any chance it is trans, diff or PS fluid? the wind and movement can make leaks appear wider than they are. Atleast after a good clean you will have a better idea.
