Default Reverse engineering, down sizing motor

I am needing to know if the 4.0 out of a 02 DII will work in my 03 DII with bad 4.6. If understanding I will need swap intakes? And seen something about cam is that just with older gems to bosch. I dont need why do I want do this, in short I can buy the other 02( bad trans) less than what I can buy gaskets, bolts , antifreeze, and, machine work for. And the details have been non less than sketchy on motor in the 03 other than got hot. I think broke cam or chain possible. I have looked but not found this done everyone else goes bigger.
But none less just need buy myself about 6 months till I get my swap built and ready. It will see pretty light duty as we drive our cars except if all togather and will need the rover this winter. Then after swap done this spring will throw 4.0 back in the 02 and have a wheeling toy. Just trying make best with what little I got to work with. Thanks in advance.

it'll work, fine. ecu may be a little confused. no intake or chain issue....older cam would need machining to be shortened, not applicable in your case

Why not just swap out the 4.6 ECU for the 4.0 ECU?

Have it in my wife's 04, direct swap with 4.6 ECU still running the show.

The intake you are referring to is the diameter of the MAF connection on the air filter box on an 04/ 4.6 is bigger then a 4.0. Just use all your 4.6 air intake, MAF, and hose and connect to upper air plenum on Motor.

Make sure both motors are either SAI or Non.

Thanks for great replies. Off work heading that way to look at it. Any tell sighns to look for on motor? I figured pull rad cap while running and put hand down by heads. Guess no exhaust imagine they cut cats for scrap so going have look over well as won't be able to hear anything. What is deal with sai? It will still work either way . We don't have inspections or smog here. Once again thanks for all replies I will let everyone know how it goes.

If your car is not SAI equipped and the motor you are buying is, just use a Threaded plug/bolt to cap off the holes in the heads and remove the SAI equipment from the motor.

But anyways I bought the other only scare was didnt have starter to hear run but it was running and had drive shaft death. Going to throw back on and check before i pull it. Was really surprised thing is in pretty good shape has good tires so bonus. Going to start swap as soon as i run down a picker. Thanks again and will keep posted.
