Default Reversing “clunk”: what fresh hell is this?

I think I need some diagnosis help from the group:
I was backing up slowly in an underground garage yesterday when i heard and felt a clunk. It felt like I’d hit something small or run over something.
Immediately jumped out and checked all around but I was just on smooth concrete with lots of space.

Then later in the evening I was coming off the freeway on a long downhill ramp. As I was slowing with just the transmission it started pulsing — giving more resistance and then less on around a one second interval.
I immediately put it into neutral and it stopped doing that.

So. What have I wrecked?

I thought maybe the rubber rear prop shaft coupling. But no, it looks just fine.

What to check next?

Thanks!
