Snapping Thud When Engaging Drive & Reverse
Hi Guys,
I just hit 100,000 miles on my '99 Disco II. Within in the last couple weeks I've had an alternator and air suspension go bad. The car has just developed a new problem. I've noticed a pretty loud thud when engaging D or R. Once the car is off and running I have no vibration or anything like that. I had a friend engage the gears while stopped, and noticed the front drive shaft turn a couple degrees and then make a Snap sound...as my friend put the gear into R or D. It does it from R to D and vice versa.
Has anyone experienced this problem and what was involved in fixing the problem? My budget has taken a hit from the last couple weeks of issues, so please offer suggestions.

RE: Snapping Thud When Engaging Drive & Reverse
That has always been a small amount of a thud when shifting between gears, this is normal. In your case, based on your mileage, you have either a bad roto-flex on the rear drive shaft or two failing u-joints on the front drive shaft where it hooks to the t/case.
If you are not sure what to look for call me today and I'll walk you thru it.

Thanks Disco Mike! The sound is definitely coming from the front drive shaft. Only in the last 2 days has it made such a sound....a pretty loud clank when engaging the gears. Does this mean she's ready to drop a shaft, or can I drive it to the shop?
