Default Service Engine Soon Light On. 2002 Disco

My Service Engine soon light cameon today at 51,291 miles. Could someone tell me what I could do to find and fix the problem or am I going to have to go to the dealership. The D2 is my daily driver but I only put about 8k miles on it per year. I drove it to work today and after my 9 hour shift i hopped in and BAMthere it was! I really love my disco and plan on keeping it for the long haul but I dont know much about working on them but am willing to learn. Thanks!

No need to go to the dealer, just take it to any autoparts store and have them read the codes, write them down and get back to us with the codes.
No need to panic, everything is going to be ok, it is just a trk.

If the light were flashing then I would be worried.

Once you get the 4 digit code numbers, get back to us so we can help you.

Ok im back with the 4 digit code. Its P0442. Auto Zone said that I probably didnt have my gas cap on tight enough. He didnt clear the service light for me and said if I disconnected my battery I would disapear. Is this ok to do?

Yes it is ok to disconnect your battery. But you must have the security code for the stereo, if you dont the stereo will not work. You will have to call the dealer and give them your VIN# and then they can look up the code for you.
And no, it will NOT clear the CEL. Go back and ask them to do it, $5 in it for him if he does.
