Default Should I buy it? NEw to landrovers here

Hello all,

I have an oportunity to purchase the cleanest I have ever seen 04 discovery. This car is in excellent shape. I am going to test drive it tomorrow. The dealer however spray painted the under side (trying to hide something? I am not sure. Everything looks great. There is a little dripping looks like off the transmission. I am a mechanic so I am not affraid to work on this thing and actually i like to work on stuff so I am not worried about fixing the things that I read go bad on these things. I am looking to purchase this for a utility vehicle and to drive in the harsh winters we get here in cincy. Anyways the rover has 84000 miles it is a se model, looks like it does not have the sls because it has coils on it. They want 9900 for it. Is that the price this would go for. I was hoping to get it for like 8500. I will let you all know tomorrow how the drive went. Anything I should look for when I drive it?

thanks guys!

The first thing that I tell anyone that is interested in buying a Land Rover is that they have to be mechanically inclined and be willing to work on it but you are a mechanic so I don't have to tell you this. The spray paint on the bottom might not be paint, it could be waxoyl or some other type of rust proofing. Do you know if the truck is originally from up north where salt is used on the roads in the winter time? Minor leaks are kind of common with Land Rovers even though mine doesn't leak at all. Try to find out if the head gaskets have already been replaced, if not then that could very well be one of your first projects since they tend to fail anywhere from 75k miles to 120k miles. They rarely go past 120k miles. If it has Dexcool I would replace it with Peak global because Dexcool likes to have gaskets for breakfast, lunch, and dinner if you don't already know that. I would also perform Mike's 60k mile service and rebuilt the front driveshaft regardless of wether its been done already. Don't be shy about haggling, the economy is bad, LR aren't for every one (reliability issues), and they are gas guzzlers. Good luck and I hope that everything works out.

Check out this listing under the tech section of our Discovery 1 part of the forum, covers D1 and D2s. https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...scovery-21328/ There is also another listing that compares D1 and D2. D2's have much more complex electronics, trade-offs on the transfer case, etc.

Also, below is link to free download of complete factory shop manuals for vehicle, electrical, owners, body & interior, navigation, entertainment, etc.

You can uses www.statewidelist.com to search all of craigslist for your state, for Rover, in a price range, and it will sort the output by city. Probably around 75 listed at the moment.

Rmember, if there's no oil under it there ain't none in it!

Well I bought her today! After the test drive and about a 2hour inspection I decided to buy it. I will post pictures when i get a chance. I think you all will agree it is a pretty damn clean discovery. I cannot count one scratch in the paint and not even one wrinkle in the leather. I can't wait until I get a chance to take it along a trail somewhere! Well let the fun began. I am going to pull the front drive shaft this weekend.

Here's a write up. Propshaft Rebuild - Land Rover Forums - Land Rover Enthusiast Forum

Be sure you also read up on how the diffs and transfer case work, helps to know what you can rotate when working on the propshaft. Wear eye protection, just did mine and put it back in tonight. D1 easier than D2.

I worked mine with two ramps on passenger side.

I found the write up thanks!

I am becoming a little nervous because I hear a ticking coming from the top of the motor. The ticking only happens after the motor warms up. And is most noticable at idle. The engine also seems to idle a little low right at the 2nd mark on the tack (670 RPM?) Hoping its nothing major! The motor still revs nice and seems strong.

You may have the "tick". Some people live with it if it bothers them, some try everything imaginable to try and fix it.

I don't mean to scare, it could be something minuscule as well.
