squeaky brakes problem
I have a 97 Disco 1 and had new rotors put on in May. The kit came with the brake pads too. It is the EBC performance rebuild brake kit.
Within the last month or so, I've noticed that as I drive the vehicle, the brakes have become increasingly noisier (squeaky). I live on an island that has a lot of hills, but I don't think that is a factor being that it recently started making noise.
The more I drive the louder the squeaking becomes, almost to the point of a high pitched schrill. I thought it might be the buildup of brake dust, so I took a hose to the wheels and tried to wash away the dust, but that didn't work.
I can't imagine the pads are worn through already, even on a hilly island. Our other car's brakes last about a year or so.
My mechanic said that the pads could be cheap pads the company throws in as a kit, so they are not the best quality.
What to do?
Any input would be helpful.

Does it squeak when driving or when braking?
Did you put sound deadening material on the back of the pads prior to installing them?
The pads you got are a good quality pad so I wouldn't worry about them.

Hey Mike,
Thanks for responding. I don't believe the mechanic did put any sound deadening material on the pads.
When taking a a corner, either right or left, I hear a slight chirp, chirp chirp sound. When I straighten up, it stops mainly.
I just remembered too that there is a little black plug attached to each set of pads. To your knowledge, does that plug into something, because the mechanic didn't plug them into anything.
Thanks again.

Some vehicles have brake wear sensors, I don't believe your did.
Sound deadening material would help stop the squeaks asl well as possibly checking and lubricating the slides if they need it.

I don't think you need to put any sort of compound on the back of the pads, as EBC already have a coating of the back of their pads. I replaced all 4 rotors and pads on my wife's disco. Hers is an '03, so I am starting to do the maintenance now myself as the warranty is up and the dealers are 4 hours from where we are at right now.
I would suspect that your pads are glazed and not mating with the rotor surface properly. It's a little late to ask of you bed in the brakes properly, but you can still do it to try and clean both surfaces of the pad and rotor. Another problem could be a mis-alignment of the rotor on the hub because you state that the problem exists when you go around corners. I would take it back to the mechanic that did the brake job and have them inspect the rotors. Or, just do it yourself....I do all of my own work that I run on road-race tracks!
I'm new to working on the Discovery, but some things are the same with all cars.
