squeeling and overheating 96 disco
Look through the grill, you will see two fans attached to the A/C condensor. They will come one when you run the A/C so start it up and turn on the A/C and if they are running then that is not your problem.
Do you still have the squeeling noise?

ahh ok. i'm going to run to the store right now and get some coolant and try it again. as for the squeeling noise, yes, it still squeels. only when the car is in gear and you're accelerating. revving in neutral wont make it squeel.
update: battery's been dead so i jumped the rover to get it started and check those a/c compressor fans. got it running, noticed that only the driver side fan was rotating when a/c was on full blast. looked like the passenger side was trying it's best but going nowhere. the engine temp seemed stable so i drove it around the block to check the temp. pressed the clutch to stop at a stop sign and the car just died. lights dimmed and everything just shut off. tried to jump it again, but to no avail. the engine wouldnt even turn over. pushed it back to my house by myself and went to walmart to buy a new battery. installed the batt, tried to start the car but got nothing. still wouldnt turn over. left it alone for an hour, read my workshop manual, wiggled a wire under the hood (dont ask me what wire it was. it was dark but i think it was near the solenoid?) and tried it again. started right up and ran fine. drove it around the block and it didnt overheat. let it idle for 15min afterwards and the temp was fine. turned the heat and a/c on full blast and no problems. but i checked those compressor fans again and this time, neither fan was spinning with the heat or a/c on. im assuming the car had time to cool down after the sun went down so the freon didnt need to be cooled as much? also, the SRS idiot light came on. dont know what it means, but im guessing it came on b/c i disconnected the battery? maybe i tripped something?
anyway, i want to say thanks to eveyone for their effort to help me with my problem. i really appreciate it and probably would've gone insane without lrf. as for the squeeling: it's still there but im counting my blessings right now. once i quiet those, i need to fine some decent headers and replace the cats.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a faulty cable to my engine compartment fuse box. Best way to test it is to hook up a meter to your battery and see the voltage before going out any buying a battery. I lost all power to the car and i measured my voltage at 12.69V then measured my voltage at my fuses and they measured out at 2.12v so I knew there was a problem from the battery to the fuse block. Land rover used some really small guage wire as well so I replaced the ground, the starter, and fuse block wires. I went with 2ga for a ground and starter and 8ga for the fuse block.
By default when the A/C is on the condensor fans are supposed to turn on. check your connections, wiring, and the fuse (sometimes the fuses can be corroded or partially damaged causeing inconsistent operation). If the fans are indeed dead you can replace them with the pancake Denso motors (just the motors) from a 93 Toyota Corolla (I think my new fans are off a 94). It is a pretty easy swap, just cut the connector off the Toyota Denso Motor and splice in the the existing wiring. You dont even have to remove any part of the old wiring, just leave an inch or two of wire on the old motor and splice it in (The colors do match from both motors). If you have to replace let me know I can give you step by step instructions on how to do it, it would have been nice if I had them when I did mine.
Cant help you with the SRS light since I have not had any problems with mine.
If you want to track down the squeeling then you can add some belt dressing, if it goes away then you know its the belt, if it stays then get a Mechanics stethoscope and listen to your bearings on your alternator, water pump, power steering pump, pulleys, and belt tensioner.
