Default SRS Issue - Removing Airbag Cover Torx Bolts

The SRS light has come on intermittently. The Nanocom says there is a ground short to the airbag module. Going to check the rotary coupler and the electrical connectors.

I need to remove the steering wheel cover. RAVE says to remove the two Torx bolts at the back of the steering wheel. Unfortunately, there is no space for my head to take a peek at the Torx bolt heads.

I tried to loosen it with a few Torx wrench sizes. The wrenches do not seem to catch on to the Torx slots in the bolts. I hate to force it and strip the heads of the bolt. Does anyone know the specific Torx size of these 2 bolts (see attached pic).

Thanks in advance!

If I recall correctly it's 8mm.

I have used a regular 8mm 6 point socket without issues.

Maybe someone else can confirm?

a T27 is the correct torx socket size. Keep in mind, unless your socket is deep, it will not adequately reach the bolt. I have a Snap On that works like a charm but my other T27 sockets won't reach that deep into the steering wheel.

I wonder if it would be easier to reach those torx bolts if you first removed the plastic cover directly behind the steering wheel. Seems like it would give you more room to work with. Also you could always use a mirror or take a picture of the bolt using your smart phone.

You may need a set like these Mannesmann T Handle Wrench SET 16 PCS Torx AND Ballpoint HEX KEY Wrench SET | eBay

or a socket set type with long torx rods.

Don't forget to disconnect the battery first and allow the specified time before you attack the airbag. Also treat it gently, very gently, you don't want a facefull of metal - now do you

Are they the type of Torx bolts that have a "post" in the middle of the head (i.e. require a spanner with a corresponding hole in it)? AKA: Security Torx or Tamper-proof Torx? Airbags on Rover cars usually had that type and a conventional Torx bit won't fit.

I'm not 100% certain but reasonably sure they aren't security torx bolts. Mercedes are the ones for those

For future google-ers a T30 torx with no little hole on the middle worked fine. You don’t need to remove the cover.

I have removed mine a few times. It is either a regular t27 or a t30. I use "key" style torx wrenches, they fit into the holes in the back of the steering wheel well. You may also want to think about replacing the clockspring. Mine went bad and caused all sorts of issues with the airbag light, horns, and cruise control not working right.
