Default starting noise

Hey all. I have just purchased a 2000 Disco II with 86k miles on it. When I start it there is a short (about .5 sec) sound right after it fires. The sound is similar to the air suspension pumping up, but it sounds like it comes from right behind the dash. This is the first Rover I have ever had, and I have a lot to learn. Any help would be appreciated. I have been reading posts none stop and really enjoy learning everything i can about this rig.

Try starting it in the morning with the air system shut off completely, sounds like it could be the fan and this is an easy way to test for it.

If you hear it coming from the dash area, it might also be the ABS pump. The next time you start it up, place your foot on the brake. Don't press the brake, just place your foot there and see if you "feel the noise". If its the same noise/feel, then you don't have to worry about anything... its just the ABS pump starting up.

Happy Rovering!

If the above checks don't yield anything, try unpluging the secondary air injection pump. This is located right on the engine side of the firewall on the passanger side, and supplies additional air into the exhaust to fully burn the rich mixture on startup.Unplugging it will result in a fault code being thrown bythe ecu,but won'thurt anything.Mine makes a noise when it first starts up.

I think it is the ABS pump. I can "feel" the noise in my foot when I stat it. Thanks for the help.

If it is the ABS doing its precheck, there is only a slight bump in the pedal and should not be any other noise.

I believe there is a noise that is associated with the prechecking... mine does it as well... I'm glad we could be of help to you! : )
