Also a custom cam grind because of the different firing order between the LS and the Rover V8. That's pretty costly in and of itself.

Wouldn't an LS use it's own cam, and electronics to control it? So you could use any LS cam to support however the engine was built?

That's not how trailhead does it. They retain the Rover electronics and sensors, hence the custom cam.

Saw the engine swap, while at Trailhead, and it looked professional done. Eric is an awesome dude, very knowledgeable about rovers...and toyota. One man show, from what he mentioned to me. Wish he was closer, would love to work with him after retiring from my day job.

If, and this is a size of the earth "if", I was building a special Dll rig that I planned on keeping forever...I'd not think twice about going this route. Buy a clean body/frame/interior rig for a couple grand and drop this engine in it. 12K for a reliable Dll and build from there...much better than building and continually having engine issues...IMO.

Not to derail the general direction of the thread but what about the state of gas-to-diesel conversion? Would a swap to a 300tdi in a DII be a viable option in 2018? Or is there another diesel alternative?

How about somebody else do the research and first build on the TDI conversion, I'll go second. (surely it's been done plenty of times, just not out front and center on this forum.) There are probably guys over in the EU wanting to do Petrol engine swaps..

Tdi swap on a D1 makes sense, D2 does not. Td5, maybe, if you want to do the wiring.

The term..."makes sense"...and owning a Discovery l or ll...doesn't belong in the same sentence.

Unless, it is being used like.."it only makes sense to sell this thing or blow it off the fast of the earth with a ton of C4".

Now, that "makes sense"...in the Discovery world...lol.

What issues are you having? I would have no concern driving mine anywhere. I would be thinking the basics and routine maintenance up to date - coolant hoses, drive belt, u-joints, lubes, etc
