Steering Box Replacement
#12
My steering box leaks as well and plan to replace it in the spring along with the upper and lower ball joints. I may go with a new one if I can swing it. The best price I've found so far is $1,000: https://www.suburbanautoparts.com/oe...RoCp88QAvD_BwE
If I can't I'll go with a re-manufactured unit, but need to further research the companies that sell the re-manufactured units.

Four hours in. Got the old box out. Cleaned up the replacement box. Waiting for the paint to dry and then I can stick it in.
Replacement box
Cleaning it up
Ready to prep for paint
Had to hit this with a 5lb to get it to break free
It was a beast but I got it out.
Cleaned, primed and painted with brake caliper paint. I know it will rust again but I can’t stand putting crappy looking parts back into the disco.
Took a bit of a break and swapped out the bulbs on the low beams with 100w Hella bulbs.
Probably more noticeable at night but the low beams are definitely whiter than the highs IMO.
Should of prepped the box yesterday so it would be ready to go in but it’s 70 and sunny so I should be able to get started again in an hour. Hopefully the install will be easier than the removal!

Figured out I can stretch the opening of the coupling to the steering shaft so that may help me get it on easier. Got the Pangaea, drag link and steering box in. Going to retreat for now and deal with the intermediate shaft in the morning.
Also found time during breaks to install the dashboard repair kit. It’s a small success but I will take it.

I was not excited to try it myself, and as a result have driven with a slightly ****-eyed steering wheel for about 10k miles. I'm simply not undoing that steering box connection a 4th time. I used a 2' pipe wrench with my foot and could not get it to budge. Maybe if I get it up in the air and can get an extension on it.
